A tradition has started in Europe. For one weekend, museums (and some other cultural institutions) stay open into the evening, and some put on all-night events. It happened between 13th and 15th May in 2011.
Most of the United Kingdom called the event ‘Museums At Night.’ The rest of Europe had ‘Nuit des Musées’ (although I noticed that many seemed to use the English hashtag on Twitter). In most places, ‘museums’ can be used to cover archives, historic and archaelogical sites, libraries and galleries.
Newcastle and Gateshead like to be a little more literal and obviously culturally integrated, and call the event The Late Shows. The events include the historic environment as well as museums, libraries and archives, galleries and cinemas, contemporary art and design, and performing arts. It is a lively weekend, and it can be difficult to choose where to go because it is all wonderful.
I started off at the Mushroom Works and did not get any further, mainly because I spent so long chatting to people there.
